Many of the house's fundamental fixtures were old and needed replacement.  Others were inconsistent in terms of color and style, and henceforth were replaced with more tasteful items.

As the first example, let's look at a typical light switch and it's replacement.  This particular switch is located in the doorway of the master bedroom.  As you can see from the picture below on the left, the switch originally installed was a hot pink model, with a stylish clear plastic wall guard, as well.  In addition, the switch itself was caked with build up from years of use, and it would wake the dead with its THUNK! when thrown.  This can be seen as a good example of the switches found throughout the house.  As mentioned, the rest of the fixtures varied in color and texture, so as to assault the optic sense.  All have been replaced with switches of the type shown below to the right.  This particular example is lit when off, but the regular switches are physically identical.  These switches are quiet when thrown, and perform their duties without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves.

As an aside, not unexpectedly, upon removal of the switch cover, it was discovered that the switch had been painted over.  This is a clear violation of Scott Code.  If this happens repeatedly, the fixture in question becomes hard to remove because the screw slots are filled with PAINT, and it may even stop working if the painter is sloppy enough.  Remember to loosen your fixtures and paint around them with a brush or small roller when painting a room!

One of the first things done was the installation of new chimney caps.  As seen in the picture below on the left, the previous covers were a black steel affair, simply held in place by narrow support struts, and provided little protection from animals and weather.  They were replaced by two stainless steel caps, seen below on the right, which totally enclose the chimney openings.

Scott Code requires a vented range in the kitchen.  Anything less would result in a stinky kitchen.  Therefore, on August 15, 1999, a combination microwave / range hood was installed.

An electrical outlet was installed in the cabinet above the range, and a vent duct was installed through the ceiling to the roof.
The completed range vent where it exits the roof.
